Install your agent in Gemini

Google is replacing Gems with skills. For personal Google accounts, Gems move to skills from November 2026. Work and school accounts follow in 2027. Use Option A if you can. Use Option B only if your work or school account doesn't show Skills yet.

Option A: as skills (personal accounts, about 3 minutes)

You need to be 18 or over, signed in, with Keep activity turned on. Uploading skills currently works on gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app on Mac.

  1. Go to gemini.google.com. In the sidebar click Customise (it may be under More), then Skills at the top.
  2. Unzip your kit first. Then click Upload and choose the file gemini/skills/ava/SKILL.md (on a computer you can choose the ava folder instead). This is your agent: its personality, job and rules. Check it, then click Create.
  3. Do the same for the other folder in gemini/skills/. That's your agent's job skill.
  4. In any chat, type / (or @, if your app has the newer shortcut) and pick ava to start talking to your agent. Gemini can also use the job skill automatically when a request fits.
  5. Optional: add your own price list or FAQs. On the Skills page, download the skill, add the files to the same folder as its SKILL.md, then use Skill actions → Replace skill. The folder name must match the skill name.

Option B: as a Gem (work and school accounts, until they switch)

  1. Go to gemini.google.com, open Gems in the sidebar, then New Gem.
  2. Name: your agent's name. Instructions: paste all of gemini/gem-instructions.md.
  3. Knowledge: add your own price lists or FAQs if you like.
  4. Try it in the preview, then click Save. When Google switches your account to skills, it converts the Gem automatically. You can also install it with Option A then.

Test it

  • Type /ava and ask: "Who are you and what are your rules?"
  • Ask it about something it can't know. It should say so, not guess.

Notes

  • Skills don't use a custom picture. Keep your avatar from avatar/ for your other apps.
  • Up to 100 skills can be active at once. Turn off ones you don't use on the Skills page.
  • Don't let Gemini "improve" the instructions for you. It can drop your agent's safety rules.
